BIOGRAPHY

Born in Colombia, Christian Alberto Restrepo Sánchez has dedicated his life to the creation, performance and teaching of music. He has been the recipient of several international awards in composition and piano performance. Additionally, Dr. Restrepo has participated has performer and clinician in important international festival such as  VIII Encuentro Internacional de Piano Piracicaba, in Brasil; Festival Internacional de Música de Cámara, in Guatemala; Encuentro de Piano Luis Felipe Arias, in Guatemala; VI, VII y VIII Encuentro de Pianistas, in Costa Rica; AFA Summer camp, in Houston, among others. He is also the funder and artist director of Houston International Piano Festival, musical event that will have its first edition in June 2025.

Restrepo's music looks  for intriguing combinations between south American rhythms, contemporary techniques, and the enchantment of the romantic era. As pianist, his interpretations are the image of his extroverted and passionate personality; each performance displays a variety of colors that depict his search for new subtleties in music.    

 

Committed to the discovery of new pedagogical paths to approach music, Restrepo's teaching philosophy proposes the idea of self-discovery, a thought where the student is encouraged to use his/her own musical judgments to approach different musical projects. The goal is to enhance a more creative an analytical mind based on the knowledge acquired during the student's musical and personal experience. 

 

Restrepo is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers; the American Federation of Musicians; the Music Teachers National Association; and the American Composers Forum. Restrepo is also an Educational Partner of the prestigious piano company Steinway and Sons. 

 

In 2006, Restrepo earned his bachelor’s degree in piano performance from El Instituto De Bellas Artes in Medellín, Colombia. In 2010 he obtained his master’s in piano performance from Sam Houston State University, and in 2014 his doctorate in piano collaborative from the University of Houston, with a minor in composition.
